You’ll be armed to the teeth with Cat Advansys ™

PE & GC Harris Road Contractors Operations Manager Eron Roberts knows more than most people the need for effective and efficient machinery maintenance after all as he puts it, he’s “in the middle of Central Queensland, in the middle of nowhere”. The Boulia-based company, 300kms south from Mt Isa, has operations in road construction, providing the local Shire Councils with various quarry materials and with 32 years with PE & GC Harris Road Contractors Mr Roberts says it’s not just about maximising time but effective labour force. That’s why he’s utilising Caterpillar’s Advansys ™ robust system of tips and adapters that deliver the highest productive and the quickest installation and removal times.  When you are running excavators and loaders, having a tooth come off and be crushed in the machinery is not an option.

“It’s been 12 months since we first went to Advansys, we just find they work so much better in terms of time difference than the old types,” he says. “We are definitely saving money with the Advansys in only needing one person to change the whole set: you don't have to have two people there, so that definitely saves money.   “The old types could take us five hours, replacing teeth with the old pin type whereas with the Advansys you use a simple Allen key to unlock it, pull it off, clean a bit of the dirt out and put it back on: one person in five minutes.” Mr Robert sees the significant benefit of Advansys™ is the single piece: that the lock in device is actually in the tooth.  “With the old type you had the tooth, the pin and the locking washer. With the Advansys, everything's there: you don't have to worry about multiple parts.  Once you lock them in, they don't come out whereas with previous parts there was the tendency for them to come off. We did have that problem with one of our loaders where it kept coming off.

“We haven't had one drama with any tooth coming off or anyone getting hurt while they are doing changes. We have a lot of confidence in them: it’s a great system and we're not going to go any other way.” The Harris operation relies only on Cat machinery, backed by a history of exceptional service from Hastings Deering Mt Isa. "We find Cat machinery to be far superior and the service you get, in the backup support is probably one of the biggest plusses," Mr Roberts says. "Being so far from anywhere, three hours from Mt Isa, we can rely on them. That’s always been the same for the 40 years of operation: we've always relied heavily on Hastings Deering: we can't complain, we’re very happy."
